The Porsche 356

The Porsche 356 was the Porsche brand's first own vehicle. The idea of a sports car had been obvious since the construction of the Porsche Type 64. But it was not until after the war that Ferry Porsche was able to initiate an appropriate car. The car with the construction number 356/1 still had a rear mid-engine, the production cars had a rear engine and used a number of parts from the Volkswagen Type 1, whose production had just started successfully. From 1948 onwards, the 356 was produced in series, first with an aluminum body in Gmünd, then with a steel body in Stuttgart. These first cars, with either split or bent windshields, were built until 1955.

From 1955, the 356A was produced. The key feature was the now curved windshield, and five engine choices were available, from 40 to 70 hp. In 1959, the 356B appeared, which differed primarily by the first comprehensively modified body. Bumpers and headlights were set slightly higher, the car appeared altogether more modern due to the facelift. The 356B was available with engines from 60 to 130 hp. The Porsche 356C was built from 1963 to 1965. Externally, the C hardly differed from the late B models. Technically, however, a lot had changed, the C model had disc brakes all around and was available with three different engines from 75 to 130 hp.

In 1965, production was discontinued. The successor to the four-cylinder models was the Porsche 912.
