The X300: Exterior Design

Although the X300 shares the same platform as its predecessor, the XJ40, the appearance is not only familiar but also modern:

The Jaguar saloon with the internal designation X300 has again been designed a little more classically according to the lines of the first three XJ series. On the one hand, the X300 reverts to the traditional lines of the bonnet, which are precisely aligned with the four separate round headlamps, reminiscent of the classic Jaguar XJ Series III line. On the other hand, it features the rounder lines of the XJ40 rear, giving it a distinctive appearance in true Jaguar style. Thus, the X300 meets with a fresh face. The traditional, authentic retro look still shines through.

This mixture of traditional and characteristic Jaguar design and the simultaneous continued use of the XJ40 rear end resulted in a harmonious and aerodynamically optimised vehicle. It was well received on the market and still has its enthusiasts today.

What is also new is the aerodynamic design. A necessity, since the X300 has a slimmer capacity of 5.5 litres compared to its predecessor.

Jaguar and Daimler XJ Interior Design and Equipment

The X300 offers more headroom than its predecessor, but otherwise strongly follows the brand's design traditions. The seats have been redesigned and are equipped with finer leather, more refined wood and softer carpets, not only in the luxury versions.

Technically, the X300 comes with automatic climate control and rack-and-pinion power steering, as well as refined chassis tuning that guarantees improved handling.

The X300 was the first Jaguar to be developed using the then brand new computer-aided design (CAD), which helped to shorten the preparation time until the start of production.

Engines in the Jaguar and Daimler XJ until 1997

The engine range of the X300 was formed by a V12 and a revised 6-cylinder AJ6, which was later renamed AJ16.

  • The X300 was available for the Classic, Sport and Executive versions with a 6-cylinder in-line engine. With a larger displacement (4.0 litres), it was also available in the Sport, Sovereign and Daimler Six versions.
  • A supercharged version of the four-litre engine was available in the XJR version. The crowning glory was the 6-litre V12 for the XJ12 and the Daimler Double Six.

All models operate via rear-wheel drive with a four-speed automatic transmission (or optional five-speed manual transmission on the 6-cylinder models).

X300 models

The X300 V12 was better designed than its predecessor, the XJ81, and was internally christened X305 at Jaguar. The model is attractive to those who prefer a Jaguar with all the luxury features, while the XJR caters for sportier ideas.

In October 1996, a long-wheelbase version (X330) was introduced to the Classic, Sport and Executive models as a Sovereign and Daimler variant.

Special bodies of the X300 include an extended Daimler Six version for Jaguar boss Nick Scheele and a convertible launched to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Daimler brand and christened "Daimler Corsica".
