Interesting facts about classic cars and LEDs

The first LED light-emitting diodes were indicator lights and were used in auxiliary brake lights at Cadillac from 1993. A lot has happened since then, and since the 2000s more and more vehicle manufacturers have been using the energy-saving and smart technology in rear lights, brake lights and indicators.

Later, as in the Audi A8, LEDs were also used for daytime running lights and then later for high and low beams, thanks to the Hella company. LED lights are characterized above all by excellent luminosity, but with low power consumption. In addition, they do not emit heat and have a fast response - so use these advantages for your classic car too!

Is it permissible to install LED headlamps in classic cars?

A distinction must be made between LEDs in areas relevant for registration and in areas not relevant for registration. Most drivers of classic vehicles will not think of installing LEDs in their vehicles. This is because of authenticity, light color and brightness. Often it also has to do with the fact that LEDs are generally larger than light sources with filaments.

The main advantage of LEDs is their extremely low power consumption. And this makes the LED light an ideal illuminant in the areas relevant for licensing, such as interior lights, trunk or engine compartment lighting.

This is precisely the point, that the potential can be exploited. Often the battery is empty or even dead because the (passenger) door has not been fully closed. Or because the contact of the glove compartment light has not been set correctly. Through the use of LEDs inside the vehicle, you can greatly reduce the load on the battery.

In addition, LEDs do not emit heat. The environment often becomes very warm due to the low air exchange  using a normal 10 watt indoor light. Warmer than old thermoplastics need to deform. We recommend replacing all interior lights with LEDs, not least for a safety aspect.

Because higher power does not automatically mean higher heat, we advise changing the engine compartment lighting to a more luminous LED bulb so that the lighting can be a real help.

You will get a greater benefit using LED dashboard-lighting. LEDs have a significantly longer service life than conventional light bulbs. They also do not burn out, but only weaken after the very long service life has expired.

Replacing a bulb in the instruments is very time-consuming, and thus expensive work. Here, the conversion to LED illuminants, which are available in many different base shapes, is worthwhile in any case.

LED approval and other technical advantages

Exterior lighting is regulated by the STVZO, all components must have a certification mark, LEDs do not all get a certification mark at the moment. In general, LED lights with approval on new vehicles have been available for many years. For retrofit options, the tests are not worthwhile due to the low numbers of units expected. Nevertheless, there are technical reasons to install LEDs.

Both of the two-filament lamps at the rear require 50 watts in driving mode. That's a current of 4 A flowing through the already slightly corroded steering column switch, not counting the front headlights. If the contact resistances in the wiring harness become higher over time, using LEDs can work wonders. Parking lights, for example, can be operated with about one tenth of the current previously required.

Classic vehicles with 7" headlamps have the option of mounting one of the many swap inserts, created for the sealed beam market. These solutions can be mounted in many classic vehicles without much effort. The sometimes very modernistic look restricts the use to younger vehicles such as Landrover.

Classic car LED headlamps and lights with E-mark

If you receive the E-mark, you can be sure that the components marked with it have undergone the necessary tests and approvals and have been granted ECE type approval. An E-mark is required for almost all components on the vehicle.

If installed parts are operated without E-marking, the operating permit for the vehicle may expire under certain circumstances.

By the way, ECE means Economic Commission for Europe - meanwhile these regulations are valid for 63 countries and far beyond the borders of Europe! In Germany for example and also in Austria, an E-mark means that the component so marked may be carried without a special entry in the vehicle documents.

Our LED headlamps for classic cars are all equipped with E-mark. Please note that for indicators an additional resistor (part no. 499189) must be used so that the correct flashing frequency is given with the LED classic car light.

FAQ: questions and answers

Can I retrofit any classic car with LEDs?

For sports purposes or in non-EU countries, there is often no restriction. Within the scope of the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO), you should check whether the intended solution is generally approved by an E-mark or whether technical reasons allow individual registration.

Are there LED lights in retro look?

LED inserts and adapted bulbs are offered for many models. Most LED bulbs fit into the standard existing sockets.

What are the advantages of LEDs?

LEDs are more reliable than filament bulbs and consume significantly less energy. As a result, the applied currents are lower and heat generation is zero. These advantages can be used easily and inexpensively at many points in the classic vehicle to increase operational safety.
