History

In spring 1955 the production of the Silver Cloud and the Bentley S-series started under the intention to produce them together. Thus a new generation of cars was born, which replaced the Rolls Royce Silver Dawn and Bentley-R and were almost completely alike, except for the B on the hood and the Spirit of Ecstasy.

The Bentley S-series and the first Silver Cloud Series started with a small disadvantage, because they still built traditional separate chassis and bodies. Regarding this, they were behind mobiles of other manufacturers, who already relied on monocoque designs. Nevertheless, these automobiles impressed with their extremely pleasant ride and smooth reliability.

Models

For each of the two models there were three series: In 1959 the Silver Cloud and Bentley S1 were replaced by Silver Cloud II and Bentley S2, which had increased engine power. From this point on, power steering and 4-speed automatic transmission became standard and manual transmission was completely discarded as an option.

From the Bentley S2 and S3 also a Continental version was offered as a more sporty variant, which was constructed piece by piece completely after the wishes of the buyer. There were three variants of the S2 and S3:

  • the Continental,
  • the cabriolet, which was traditionally referred to as the "drophead coupe"
  • and four-door sports sedans with the resounding name "Flying Spur".

The second facelift, which produced the Silver Cloud III and Bentley S3 models, included four front headlights instead of the previous two and improved power steering. In addition to that, the radiator grille was placed lower and the fenders were equipped with separate turn signals. These changes were also part of the design change and announced the successors Silver Shadow and Bentley T1.

Engines

Drivers found the performance of the S1 and Silver Cloud too leisurely. The Series 2 received a 6.2-liter light-alloy V8 in 1959. That again matched buyers' expectations to reach a top speed of 183 mph. Higher torque and greater acceleration (from 0 to 100 in 10.9 seconds) also contributed to the sporty driving experience.

The S3 series and the Silver Cloud III underwent further improvements that included a 2" SU carburetor and again offered higher performance.

Interior

With low-slung, comfortable leather seats and ample legroom, the S1 invites you to relax virtually while driving.

The S2 is immediately recognizable with one look inside:

  • Air vents on the side of the dashboard that offer significantly better climate control
  • as well as new turn signal levers.

If you look closely, you'll also notice the more economical chrome trim in the S2, which has less shine and more salon flair.
